CHAPTER TEN
Evie lifted one leg up out of the bathwater and soaped it, pretending to be the heroine in her favorite historical novel, where hot baths were rare except for the very wealthy. Soon the hero would come in, she mused, picturing Jake standing in the doorway with a billowy white shirt open to his navel, wearing skin-tight breeches and riding boots, his eyes dark with anger and lust.
She rinsed her leg and soaped the other one. The hero, having interrupted the heroine during her bath, would be overcome by her bare, glistening flesh. Heâd drag her out of the water, dripping wet, and kiss her senseless. All over.
After rinsing her other leg, she lay back in the bathwater and swooshed her head around, getting her hair wet. Sitting up again, she shampooed and rinsed. As before, she let the bathwater out and turned the shower on for a final warm rinse.
The bathroom door burst open and the shower curtain swept aside. Evie stared at Jake and her heart pounded. He wasnât wearing a billowy white shirt, but sheâd take him. âHi.â She cursed her breathlessness, praying he wouldnât notice.
âHi.â He gave her an appreciative glance, pulled his shirt off over his head, and shucked his shorts. âMove over, Iâm coming in. Weâve got an appointment in a little under an hour.â
âAn appointment?â She moved aside to give him the spray. The workout must have done him some good, for Jake buzzed with energy. He gave her a smacking kiss on the cheek.
âPlus, the band wants to meet. The club manager wants to talk to all of you about a return engagement, and youâve got an interview set up with the Las Vegas Weekly. Oh, and youâre trending on Twitter.â
Evie watched as he soaped up his hard body, barely tracking his words. âOkay. Whatever âtrending on Twitterâ means.â Even though theyâd spent the night together, the remnants of her fantasy made her shy. And lusty.
âSo go. Get dressed. We need to be downstairs as soon as possible.â
âWhat? Why?â Puzzled, she lifted her gaze to meet his. She reached out and smoothed the water rolling off his shoulders. âIâd much rather just hop back into bed with you,â she confessed.
Jake blew out a breath. âWhoo boy. Hold that thought, sweetheart. Youâve got meetings. An interview, then a show. Go get dressed,â he said, grinning. âItâs the beginning of the big time, baby.â
âOh. Oh!â She stepped out of the tub and grabbed a towel, dried her hair and body as fast as possible. âI can do this, I can do this,â she chanted as she left the bathroom, leaving the door open wide.
The next ten minutes were a scramble as both of them dressed. Jake wore a dark suit. Evie chose bright yellow short overalls, a pink tee shirt, and pink Converse Hi-tops. Evie checked him out and groaned.
âI look like a kid.â
âYouâre fine.â
âBut you look so sophisticated, and I look like poor white trash. Oh God, my hair.â
âYou look fresh and sweet and when they hear you tonight, you will blow them away.
