CHAPTER TEN

Evie lifted one leg up out of the bathwater and soaped it, pretending to be the heroine in her favorite historical novel, where hot baths were rare except for the very wealthy. Soon the hero would come in, she mused, picturing Jake standing in the doorway with a billowy white shirt open to his navel, wearing skin-tight breeches and riding boots, his eyes dark with anger and lust.

She rinsed her leg and soaped the other one. The hero, having interrupted the heroine during her bath, would be overcome by her bare, glistening flesh. He’d drag her out of the water, dripping wet, and kiss her senseless. All over.

After rinsing her other leg, she lay back in the bathwater and swooshed her head around, getting her hair wet. Sitting up again, she shampooed and rinsed. As before, she let the bathwater out and turned the shower on for a final warm rinse.

The bathroom door burst open and the shower curtain swept aside. Evie stared at Jake and her heart pounded. He wasn’t wearing a billowy white shirt, but she’d take him. “Hi.” She cursed her breathlessness, praying he wouldn’t notice.

“Hi.” He gave her an appreciative glance, pulled his shirt off over his head, and shucked his shorts. “Move over, I’m coming in. We’ve got an appointment in a little under an hour.”

“An appointment?” She moved aside to give him the spray. The workout must have done him some good, for Jake buzzed with energy. He gave her a smacking kiss on the cheek.

“Plus, the band wants to meet. The club manager wants to talk to all of you about a return engagement, and you’ve got an interview set up with the Las Vegas Weekly. Oh, and you’re trending on Twitter.”

Evie watched as he soaped up his hard body, barely tracking his words. “Okay. Whatever ‘trending on Twitter’ means.” Even though they’d spent the night together, the remnants of her fantasy made her shy. And lusty.

“So go. Get dressed. We need to be downstairs as soon as possible.”

“What? Why?” Puzzled, she lifted her gaze to meet his. She reached out and smoothed the water rolling off his shoulders. “I’d much rather just hop back into bed with you,” she confessed.

Jake blew out a breath. “Whoo boy. Hold that thought, sweetheart. You’ve got meetings. An interview, then a show. Go get dressed,” he said, grinning. “It’s the beginning of the big time, baby.”

“Oh. Oh!” She stepped out of the tub and grabbed a towel, dried her hair and body as fast as possible. “I can do this, I can do this,” she chanted as she left the bathroom, leaving the door open wide.

The next ten minutes were a scramble as both of them dressed. Jake wore a dark suit. Evie chose bright yellow short overalls, a pink tee shirt, and pink Converse Hi-tops. Evie checked him out and groaned.

“I look like a kid.”

“You’re fine.”

“But you look so sophisticated, and I look like poor white trash. Oh God, my hair.”

“You look fresh and sweet and when they hear you tonight, you will blow them away.
